Beauregard designed the Confederate Battle Flag in 1861 to avoid confusion in distinguishing the differences with the Stars and Bars, and the Stars and Stripes. Although most people consider this flag to be the Flag of the Confederacy, it was never adopted by the CSA Congress, even though it was issued to the troops by the Confederate States of America War Department. Originally it was square and the size distinguished divisions-30″-Calvary, 36″-artillery, and 48″-infantry.
